Steyr sets signs: Together against violence on women

In Steyr, a strong sign against violence is set. In the period between the international day against violence on women on November 25th and the international day of human rights on December 10th, the action campaign "16 days against violence" will be carried out. This event is organized by "Bündnis March 8", an association of women from various political parties and civil society organizations. The aim is to draw attention to the urgent problem of violence against women.

As part of this initiative, the City Point and the Rathaus Fahnen, which represent the "Orange the World" campaign, were raised. In addition, the Steyr Bridge shines in a striking orange. National Councilor Katrin Auer, who is also City Councilor for Women's Affairs and volunteer chairwoman of the Steyr Association of Frauenhaus, emphasizes the importance of this commitment and explains: "The action should raise awareness that violence against women is still one of the most widespread human rights violations."

femicides and the right to security

The situation is alarming: 24 women have already been victims of female in Austria this year. Femicide describes the deliberate killing of a woman by a man, often motivated by patriarchal ideas of gender roles. In addition, there were 34 alleged attempts at murder and severe acts of violence against women who were mostly committed by (ex) partners or close people.

"Every woman has a right to a safe and self -determined life. For this reason, it is important to me that we also participate in the worldwide campaign 'Orange the World' in Steyr," Auer continues. This campaign aims to bring violence against women out of the taboo zone and make it visible. During the 16 days against violence, buildings worldwide shine in orange. The Steyr women's shelter also plays a crucial role in this topic. It offers a retreat for women who are affected by violence and can be reached around the clock on 07252/877 00.

The "Alliance March 8" consists of numerous important actors, including representatives of the city of Steyr, the SPÖ women, ÖVP women, the green women, ÖGB women, and other organizations such as Caritas and the Volkshochschule. This community campaign shows that the topic of violence against women is taken seriously and that there are many who are willing to actively act.
