Auto -seat in Upper Austria: Linz leads the trend towards fewer cars
A current analysis of the VCÖ traffic offices shows a remarkable development in car seat in Upper Austria. According to data from statistics Austria, the ratio of cars per 1,000 inhabitants in the district extreme tremons developed differently. While the statutory cities of Linz, Steyr and Wels have very few cars compared to their population, there are a completely different picture in rural districts.
The decline in Linz is particularly interesting, where the number of cars per inhabitant has dropped from 505 to 502. This reflects a trend that can also be observed in other state capitals. "With the exception of Eisenstadt, the level of motorization decreased in all state capitals. In cities there is a more diverse range of mobility, which makes people be less dependent on cars," explains Michael Schwendinger, an expert at VCÖ. In particular, access to shops, schools and leisure opportunities plays a crucial role in this development.
level of motorization in the regions
In contrast, the Eferding district leads the ranking in Upper Austria with a remarkably high level of car motorization. There are impressive 698 cars per 1,000 people, followed by Wels Land with 694 and Grieskirchen with 691 vehicles. These numbers also include operational cars and show that there is a clear increase in car seat in the more rural regions, while in urban areas the trend points in the other direction.
The statistics there show that it is a marking for rural areas, especially in Eferding, where the car seat is of great importance. This difference between the city and the country illustrates the challenges of mobility and raises questions about the future traffic turnaround.
cities with low car seat
A detailed analysis shows the cities with the fewest cars per 1,000 inhabitants in 2023:
- Linz: 502 (2022: 505)
- Steyr: 589 (2022: 589)
- Wels: 612 (2022: 609)
- Linz Land: 646 (2022: 643)
- Urfahr surrounding: 656 (2022: 653)
Upper Austria overall has 641 vehicles per 1,000 inhabitants this year, which is a slight increase compared to the previous year. The mobility organization VCÖ emphasizes that with an improved public transport offer and expanding the bike infrastructure, the options for mobility can also be increased in rural districts. This would help reduce traffic and dependence on the car and to increase the quality of life in the regions.
For a detailed view of the different trends in the car seat and mobility in Upper Austria, a look at the comprehensive data of the VCÖ is recommended, which will continue to accompany the change in mobility patterns in the coming years.
