November weather in the Salzkammergut: records, fog and the question of white Christmas
in the Salzkammergut, November 2024 was a month full of weather extreme. The spectrum ranged from sunny record values on the first days of the month to dense fog fields, which the landscape developed. Even short winter greetings with snowfall were part of the action, but it seems that the White Christmas would remain rather unlikely this year.
The average temperature for November was 3.9 degrees and fell exactly in the area of the long-term by means of 1991 to 2020. The meteorologist Christian Brandstätter from Meteo-Data reported that the month started with a mild and sunny holiday. November 1 was the warmest day in November with maximum values and pulled many people outside. The sun finally seemed, but soon after the holiday, cloudy weather fronts moved with a tough fog.
weather course and precipitation
From November 13th, the temperature dropped and the first snowflakes fell to the ground, but it quickly melted. The weather -related surprises continued: On November 20 and 22 November, stormy gusts blew over the region at speeds of 60 to 70 km/h. Particularly worth mentioning was a short winter intermezzo between November 21 and 23, when a few centimeters of snow fell and a touch of Advent mood. Nevertheless, there was no sustainable onset of winter, and the winter conditions proved to be rather fleeting.
The meteorological conditions were also remarkably dry. In many areas of the Salzkammergut, not even half of the usual precipitation is reached. On November 28, Seewalchen only recorded 11.3 mm precipitation, while Mondsee with almost 15 mm had the highest daily amount. Such circumstances make the views for a white Christmas unsafe. With climate change, it is becoming increasingly less common in the lowlands that a lot of snow falls at Christmas time.
Although the predictions for the holidays are unsure, there is hope for a weather surprise. Statistically speaking, a white Christmas would be long overdue. It remains to be seen whether nature actually has such a gift, because after all, the weather can sometimes be unpredictable and have real surprises ready for the population.
