Linz Osttangente: Key project for traffic calming by 2030

The planned Linz Osttangente is very important for the city and its traffic planning. State Councilor Günther Steinkellner describes this project as “vital”. Linz is supposed to bypass this new bypass over a large area and put it onto the West Autobahn A1 at Ebelsberg. The realization is sought for the late 2030s. The reason for the urgent need for action is the upcoming completion of the Prague Link motorway in the Czech Republic, which could be completed in the next five years. This fears a significant increase in truck traffic by Linz, since the path for transports from Northern Europe to the Balkans is shortened by 115 kilometers.

The current traffic situation could have dramatic consequences for Linz, especially when you consider that the toll fees in the Czech Republic are considerably cheaper than in Germany. Stone waiter and City Councilor Michael Raml are committed to ensuring that the Federal Government is taking up the project in the Federal Reasons Act. By 2027 it is expected that the Czech motorway will be passed through to the border with Upper Austria. This suggests a dramatic shift in transit traffic that would lead through the city of Linz.

Details on the eastern bypass

The east bypass is said to have a total length of around 13.5 kilometers, of which around 6.4 kilometers are planned in tunnels and 2.9 kilometers as bridge routes. This project will create important connections between the A1 and A7 motorways and enable a direct connection to important industrial areas. According to stone waiter, the transfer of traffic from the A7 to this bypass could reduce traffic load on the heavily frequented Voest Bridge by around 15,000 vehicles per day.

Currently 70 kilometers of the new D3 motorway in the Czech Republic are in operation, and another section of 28 kilometers will be opened by the end of this year. A total length of this motorway from 170 kilometers to 2031 is planned. The exact construction costs for the Linz eastern bypass are still unclear, but a sum of up to three billion euros is assumed. This means that the Eastern Tangent has an enormous impact on the future traffic development of the region.

Steinkellner demands a clear expansion of the infrastructure to meet the upcoming flood of traffic. It remains to be seen whether the political bodies will meet the proposal and take the necessary steps to implement the project.
