Fast deployment in Bad Schallerbach: exit pollution at the train station
in Bad Schallerbach, in the district of Grieskirchen, there was an incident on Wednesday evening that put the local fire brigade on alert. A pollution exit from a freight train required immediate measures after employees discovered excursions of a fine powder.
The fire brigade was alerted quickly when the powder was visible in Bad Schallerbach-Wallern station. The train station was immediately closed and train traffic was discontinued to ensure the safety of the passengers and the emergency services. While the fire brigade arrived, the emergency services began to find out which substance it was. After a certain time it was found that it was polyvinyl chloride, generally better known as PVC's abbreviation.
Details of the incident
The dangerous powder was transported in a so -called BigBag, which was apparently slightly damaged when securing the load. This caused the powder to escape. The emergency services reacted immediately and began to catch the spilled material and to clean the platform. In the meantime, train traffic could be resumed on a track.
After securing the damaged Bigbag and the successful elimination of the pollutant, the firefighters handed over the site back to the ÖBB. The railway line was interrupted for about half an hour before the traffic in the station could be limited to a track again, which gradually normalized the operation.
The incident illustrates the importance of immediate reaction in such pollutant exemptions in order to minimize security risks. Further information on this incident can become .
