With 101 blood donation: Josef Greinöcker inspired St. Thomas

Josef Greinöcker from St. Thomas has attracted attention as a blood donor through his extraordinary commitment. The 63-year-old pensioner has reached the impressive mark of 101 blood and platelet donations. At the time, he gave his first donation to the Federal Army, and since then his interest in donating blood has developed continuously. He regularly takes part in these actions, usually several times a year.

Especially in August he was given an honor, and on this occasion he realized how important his contributions are. "It is easy and you can help someone. There is also the possibility that you need one yourself," he explains. In addition to the altruistic aspect, the blood donation also has a personal touch for Greinöcker, as it gives him the opportunity to save life.

thrombocyte donation and their meaning

According to Greinöcker, around 80 classic blood donations were

of the 101 donations. He was offered the opportunity to donate platelets - special plates of blood, which can primarily be vital for cancer patients. Thrombocytes are only for a short period of time, about four to five days, durable, which makes the donation more complex: "You have to take your time to donate, you hang on the needle for an hour," reports the committed donor.

The small number of blood donors in Austria made Greinöcker think. During his honor, he learned that only about four percent of the population actively donate blood. Despite this devastating number, he has gained optimistic impressions. Through his personal commitment, he sees increasingly young people who are also willing to donate. In his own environment, he ensured that even his own children and even his wife, who had previously been afraid of donating blood, dared the step. "When you go, the children see it," he says proudly.
