Pentecostal traffic: Shock numbers and strict controls await you!
Gmunden, Österreich - At Pentecost 2024, special attention was paid to traffic safety in Austria. The police intensified their checks on accident -prone routes and popular excursion routes. This happened in view of the sometimes frightening accident statistics from previous years. On the occasion of the Pentecost weekend in 2024, there were 446 traffic accidents with personal injury, which represents a decrease of 72 accidents or 13.9 percent compared to the previous year than 518 accidents were registered. The balance of the injured was also positive: there were 529 injuries, which corresponded to 91 less (14.7 percent) than in 2023. However, the police recorded a tragic death: a 20-year-old motorcyclist lost his life in a sole accident on the B 120 in the Gmunden district after having lost control of his motorcycle.

In order to increase safety on the streets during the Pentecost holidays, the authorities used 2,500 emergency vehicles as well as 400 motorcycles and 100 civil strip vehicles. In addition to 400 inpatient and mobile speed systems, 1,247 laser speed measuring devices and 86 moped test stands were also used for surveillance. A total of 54,251 motor vehicle drivers were called up for speeding, a decline compared to the 63.011 in 2023.
The increase in the provisional driving license trains was particularly striking. The driver's license or moped card was decreased 296 drivers, which is an increase of 11.7 percent. In addition, 428 advertisements were recorded for drunkenness at the wheel, which means a decline of 8.5 percent compared to the previous year. The police also confiscated five motor vehicles due to extreme speed overruns. Interior Minister Gerhard Karner thanked the police and the road users for their behavior.

The police observed along the entire Pentecost week (13th to 20th May 2024) and found that a total of four people were killed in traffic accidents. This illustrates the persistently dangerous situation on the streets, in the carelessness, priority violations and non -adapted speeds. Interestingly, the number of traffic fatalities had dropped with 92 people in the first five months of 2024, compared to 122 in the same period of the previous year.
