Drama in Bad Goisern: 18-year-old falls 70 meters and is saved
in Bad Goisern was the weekend for a young person with a worrying incident. An 18-year-old woman from Canada crashed about 70 meters during a mountain tour in the area of the high notch and could only be saved at the last minute by the rapid intervention of the rescue workers. In a dangerous situation there was almost a disaster because it would be almost frozen due to the cold weather conditions.
The incident occurred on Saturday when the young woman made an emergency call around 6 p.m. Their position of 1,440 meters was localized via the mobile phone. Despite the emergency call, the situation quickly became more critical, since it was no longer available for the rescue workers shortly afterwards. The mountain rescue services from Bad Goisern and Bad Ischl and the alpine police were immediately mobilized, while a police helicopter from Vienna was also requested.
rescue operation under difficult conditions
At 6:40 p.m., the emergency services discovered weak light signs that indicated the position of the missing woman. After intensive efforts, the rescue workers were able to find the seriously injured woman in the snow shortly before 8 p.m. Her condition was critical because it was completely hypothermic in the winter cold and sparsely dressed.
The crew of the police helicopter shone the site, while the mountain rescue and alpine police introduced rope backups in order to be able to work safely on steep terrain. The situation was extremely serious, and the alarm of an emergency helicopter from Carinthia was essential. In order to reduce the risk of further cooling, the young mountaineer was warmed up as soon as possible. Her rescue was implemented with a wind and it was flown to the intermediate landing site in the valley, from where it was transported to the University Hospital of Salzburg to be treated intensive medicine.
The investigation show that the 18-year-old was probably broken up over the Goiserer Hütte, Kalmberg, Brenntenkogel and the deep gap. Unfortunately, she had missed the way, which led to her fall. The rapid reaction of the rescue workers was crucial, and their brave commitment avoided a potentially tragic situation that could end differently.
This incident once again illustrates how important it is to be well prepared on mountain tours and to have the necessary safety equipment, especially in winter conditions. Information about this incident are on www.tips.at to be found.
