Vocational School Altmünster: model for sustainability and environmental protection

The Altmünster vocational school recently won the Upper Austrian State Prize for the Environment and Sustainability. With its innovative project for the introduction of sustainable glass drinking water bottles, the school highlights important topics such as environmental protection and regional economic development. This award rewards the efforts of the institution to have a positive impact on the environment.

In the initiative, which started in the school year 2023/2024, the use of plastic bottles is replaced by glass bottles. This measure has contributed to significantly reducing plastic waste at the school. The school saves about 14 large garbage bags weekly, which not only simplifies waste disposal, but also contributes to the reduction of CO₂ emissions, since the drinks machines are now filled with regional products such as fruit juices and water.

a model for other schools

The focus of the project focuses on two modern drinks machines that have been completely produced in Austria, which also strengthens the regional economy. The total budget of 18,000 euros was managed by successful cooperation between students, teachers and the administration and used efficiently. Director Armin Lenz emphasized: "Our goal was not only to reduce plastic consumption, but also to raise awareness of the importance of regional and sustainable solutions."

The project of the Altmünster vocational school is an excellent example of how schools can actively contribute to sustainability. Hopefully many other educational institutions will inspire, implement similar initiatives and reduce their own ecological footprint. Such approaches are crucial in times when environmental protection and responsible consumption are becoming increasingly important.
