Historical change: First woman at the top of the engineers in Europe

A significant development in the European engineering landscape recently took place at the 26th General Assembly of the European umbrella organization of the engineering chambers (ECEC). Klaus Thürriedl, known as the Freistädter civil engineer, took over the office of Secretary General after leaving the maximum permissible term as President of the ECEC.

An outstanding characteristic of this meeting was the choice of Nina Drazin Lovrec from Croatia as the first female president of the association. Their appointment marks a historical moment for the association and could lead to a rethink in the traditionally male -dominated engineering world. Thürriedl proudly commented on this groundbreaking election and emphasized the importance of a uniform advocacy for engineers in Europe.

The new board and its goals

The newly elected board is made up of Nina Drazin Lovrec (Croatia, President), Klaus Thürriedl (Austria, General Secretary), as well as other members from Spain, Northern Macedonia, Italy and Poland. At a time when climate change and urbanization represent central challenges, the board members want to actively work on solutions based on technological innovations of civil engineers.

The session of the ECEC not only served the election of new leaders, but also the discussion on important professional topics. The central concern are the promotion of the European Green Deal and the comparability of engineering training in Europe. These steps are necessary to improve cross -border cooperation and to prepare engineers for the challenges of the 21st century.

The ECEC is based in Brussels and represents the interests of over 300,000 highly qualified European civil engineers from 17 nations. Memberships are primarily national engineering chambers or legally recognized institutions that represent graduate engineers. This gives the ECEC a strong voice in the political landscape of Europe and enables the professional concerns of engineers to be effective.
