End of an era: Upper Austria's oldest daily newspaper sets!
Linz, Österreich - On December 30, 2023, a 156 -year media dream ended in Upper Austria with the last print edition of the "Upper Austrian Volksblatt". This daily newspaper, originally founded in 1869 as the "Linzer Volksblatt" by bishop Franz Joseph Rudigier, was an important mouthpiece of the Catholic Church and the political landscape of the country. According to the diocese of Linz, the “Volksblatt” was not only a newspaper, but also a “medium of church proclamation and a bulwark for Catholic values” in turbulent times. The last issue was spread not only in Linz, but also online and in regional magazines before the website was taken from the network on January 2, 2024, such as kathpress.at reported.
The newspaper had an eventful story: it gave the Catholics a voice, especially after the capture of Bishop Rudigier in 1869, which served as the "initial ignition" for the foundation of the "Catholic Volksverein". The connection between the church and the press was very pronounced in the first decades, with priests that held the editor -in -chief until 1938. Over the years, the Volksblatt experienced numerous changes, changed the owner and experienced both heights and bitter depths, including the forced closure by the National Socialists in 1938 and a devastating fire in 1963. In the end, the "OÖ Volksblatt" was offered online for a year after decades of fate, but without the earlier shine and influence, such as An era comes to an end
On November 3, 2024, the publisher finally announced the final end of what marks the end of the approximately 44,000 print editions of the daily newspaper. From the foundation in the 19th century to the present, the "Volksblatt" was a central figure in the political and social dialogue of Upper Austria. After decades in the newspaper business, all formats are now officially withdrew, and the connection between the Catholic Church and this medium will finally be history.
