Upper Austria's mobility: the future between city and country!
Current mobility trends provide exciting insights into the traffic in Upper Austria. In a comprehensive analysis of the VCÖ (Mobility Association with a future) it becomes clear that there is a remarkable variation in the mobility behavior between urban and rural areas. The city of Linz in particular leads the ranking with a share of 21 percent of everyday life, which are covered by public transport such as buses and trains. Public transport in other cities such as Wels and Steyr, each with nine and eight percent, remains behind Linz, while in the districts Eferding and Freistadt the proportion of ten percent is slightly above the urban values, as was reported on orf.at
The mobility habits of the Upper Austrians
The analysis also shows a clear preference for active mobility, i.e. walking or cycling. In Linz, this share is 37 percent, followed by Wels with 29 percent and Steyr with 28 percent. These results indicate that citizens in urban areas tend to use healthier and more environmentally friendly means of transportation. In contrast, the districts of Gmunden and Urfahr area achieve a higher proportion of active mobility of 23 and 22 percent. These trends reflect the need to improve the infrastructure for bicycles and pedestrians in order to expand and optimize the mobility offer.
Another important topic is the discussion about future mobility. State Councilor Günther Steinkellner (FPÖ) relies on the expansion of the streets, while VCÖ propagates better use of existing infrastructures. Steinkellner argues that new roads are necessary to steer traffic and secure prosperity. In this context, he mentions the Westring highway from the point of view of traffic relief, while the VCÖ points out the high costs of road construction, considering scarce budgets. In addition, autonomous vehicles and car sharing are viewed as promising additions to the mobility solutions, which are particularly important for the last mile in traffic, as is also important on Kurier.at is emphasized.
