Forest: Experience quarter - new experience packages for nature lovers in the Waldviertel

In the Waldviertel, the “Wald: View Viertel” project has successfully graduated. Within a year, the results were presented in a presentation at the Waldviertler Sparkasse. The aim of the project is to position the Waldviertel as a model region for forest and wood and to be able to use the natural environment for tourism.

A central element of the initiative was the creation of a comprehensive overview map, which compiled around 1,000 hotspots in the region, which deals with the topic of forest and wood. This card serves as the basis for the development of special "forest experience packages", which are now to be tested. The first ten trial runs are planned for July and August 2024.

diverse experiences for those interested in nature

The experiences offered have something to offer for everyone. From special programs for schools to forest cultural hikes and offers for Waldbaden - around 100 participants from Vienna and all of Lower Austria have made themselves available for the test run. Project manager and forest ambassador Hermine Hackl was optimistic that the interest in forest topics in the Waldviertel is great and explained: "The topic of forest in the Waldviertel proves to be extremely promising." Further discussions with the tourism sector are already underway.

The eight "forest experience packages" include:

  • Wald-wood value chain (operating visits)
  • forest adventure package for students
  • experience the forest carefully and actively
  • traces in the Weinsberger Wald
  • Bauernwald from A to Z (Family Müllner)
  • From the seed to the climate crossing forest (ÖBF-Klengen Arndorf)
  • Forst cultural hike Roites (Neulinger, Rogner, Hundertwasser)
  • Waldbaden with the Waldbadem master

financing and collaborations

The project benefited from a budget of 80,000 euros, provided by the forest fund of the Republic of Austria. A network of cooperation partners also played a crucial role in promoting the initiative. These include the Waldviertel Sparkasse, the Austrian Federal Forest and the Waldviertel Economic Forum. Regional tourist players such as the Cistercian Stift Zwettl and the Weitra Castle are also involved.

Details on the overview map that shows the hotspots in the Waldviertel are also available. The engagement in the forest and wood industry reflects the desire to promote sustainable tourism concepts in the region and at the same time strengthen awareness of the protection and use of natural resources.
