A farewell to Rudi Hirsch: pioneer of the tavern culture in Groß Gerungs

The Groß Gerung region mourns the loss of one of its best -known innkeepers, Rudi Hirsch, who died on October 8 at the age of 51. Hirsch has been the heart and soul of the "Hirsch 28-Wirtshaus & Delikatessen" inn since 2016. His passion for gastronomy was not just a profession, but a way of life that he lived with great dedication.

Together with his partner Renate Stadlhofer, Rudi took over his parents' traditional inn. Under her leadership, the restaurant achieved numerous awards, including the title "promoted of the year" 2018, the honor as "top host winner" of the Lower Austria inn culture and most recently the title "NÖ Weinwirt 2022". These successes made the inn not only known locally, but also beyond the borders of the Waldviertel.

a passionate restaurateur

Rudi Hirsch developed a great passion for gastronomy in his early youth. His career led him through respected houses in Austria, France and Germany before finally returning to the Waldviertel. He had strongly pronounced his knowledge and ability in Styria. Despite his health problems that have accompanied him in recent years, he planned to go into disability pension in November. Unfortunately, he could no longer take this step.

The community hit the news of his death hard. Mayor Christian Laister was very concerned about the loss of his good friend. "His death is really extremely tragic. He grew up here in Groß Gerungs and has also managed the pond Überl very successfully for a few years. After returning to the Waldviertel, he devoted himself to his parents' inn with full vigor and made what it is today. My sympathy belongs to the whole family," said Laister.

Rudi Hirsch's funeral will take place on October 18. His merits and the traces he left in the catering trade will certainly be remembered in the region for a long time. His commitment and passion are painfully missed by the many regular guests he has inspired. The heavy load of his loss weighs not only on the shoulders of his family, but also on the entire community.
