SPÖ candidate Spenger relies on diversity and security in Wiener Neustadt

The political landscape in Wiener Neustadt could soon change, since the SPÖ mayor and top candidate Spenger revealed plans to explore the possibilities of cooperation with the FPÖ. This could be a strategic step to replace the current city government under Mayor Klaus Schneeberger . The SPÖ has experienced a significant decline in election results in the past two decades, and the result of the last municipal council election in 2020 shows a clear majority for the ÖVP with 45.01 percent, while the SPÖ only reached 26.15 percent.

Spenger and his team of 80 candidates are determined to regain votes in the upcoming elections. The address of the immigrant community in particular is an essential part of its strategy. "Families with a migration background often do not have the same turnout as others," said Spenger, what motivated them to set up their list with many candidates from different cultures.

Focus of the SPÖ

With regard to future challenges, Spenger mentions health, security and living as the most important topics for Wiener Neustadt. The situation in the University Hospital Wiener Neustadt shows a lack of staff, and the planned construction of a police monitoring room at the train station is still rejected by the responsible authorities, including the Interior Ministry and the ÖVP. "The less rising crime does not justify the use of additional security forces," is the common reasoning.

In addition, the SPÖ is concerned about the availability of living space in the city. According to Spenger, up to 300 community apartments are empty, while many citizens have difficulty finding affordable accommodation. These grievances seem to be suspected that vacant apartments are intentionally maintained for sale, although many in need are looking for cheap living space.

But what does that mean for the future political arena? The SPÖ Wiener Neustadt will start its official election campaign on January 8th. Spenger has undertaken to pursue a more positive approach without poisoning the competition. "We want to have a campaign based on our program and our ideas, not on personal attacks," he emphasizes.

With these measures and perspectives, the SPÖ will try to tip the current power relationship in the city government. It remains to be seen how voter potential reacts to these changes and whether the SPÖ can regain its position in the former stronghold.
