Snow for Christmas: Why we are experiencing less and less white festive days
A white Christmas is a long -cherished dream for many people, but reality often looks different. Especially in St. Pölten, where the most recent snow fell for Christmas in 2007, and in Wr. Neustadt, where this was the case in 2012, wanks hope for a wintry backdrop on the holidays. The meteorologists Kathrin Götzfried and Alexander Orlik von Geosphere Austria have now analyzed and revealed the reasons for the decreasing probability of snow for Christmas and what awaits us in the first week of December.
In November 2024, the people in Lower Austria experienced an interesting weather. For the first time in one and a half years, the temperatures were below the long -term average for this month. This does not mean that November was particularly cold, but that the average temperatures were moderate this month. Alexander Orlik explains: "A deviation of 0.8 degrees means that we mostly had average November temperatures. We are talking about a typical fluctuation width."
changes in the weather patterns
These changes in the weather conditions cannot be overlooked. The continuously rising temperatures have been raising questions since June 2023, especially with regard to the snow probabilities around Christmas. Experts predict that the trend continues to speak for warmer weather, which could further reduce the chances of snow -covered Christmas.
The importance of this development is far -reaching. While many long for the image of a festive, snowy Christmas Sunday, the reality shows us that climate change and its effects have an increasing impact on our seasons. This not only affects personal wishes, but also has consequences for agriculture, tourism and even domestic fauna and flora.
With a cooler November, the hope of frosty temperatures in December did not completely smash itself. The first weather reports for the coming week offer everyone who hopes for snow a little ray of hope. It remains to be seen whether the cold temperatures and possibly precipitation will extend over the next few weeks, which could put the possibility of a white Christmas back into the area of the possible.
