Westbahn celebrates comeback: Railjets roll through the Tullnerfeld again!

After three months of interruption because of the devastating flood of centuries in the Tullnerfeld, the “new” western railway line in Lower Austria returns. From the coming Sunday, December 15th, railjets will again be rolling at speeds of up to 230 km/h and cross the tunnel atzenbrugg. The ÖBB refer to the reopening as a "Christmas miracle", which was possible due to intensive repair work of the infrastructure and the throwing out spare parts -related warehouse arrears. The costs for the renovation work are expected to amount to around 100 million euros, a detailed billing is planned for summer 2025, such as 5min.at reported.

Although the western route is now being put back into operation, another partial closure is already pending. In the coming year, the trains will have to be diverted again from May 12 to June 5 via the "old" connection, which will result in a travel time extension by about 30 minutes. The first trains that drive on Sunday are the Westbahn WB 998 at 0:08 a.m. from Vienna Westbahnhof and the Railjet RJ 820 of ÖBB at 0:28 a.m. from Vienna, according to the ÖBB. In addition, the continuous traffic to Vienna Airport in Schwechat is resumed, which in the meantime was replaced by a 30-minute shuttle service from Vienna Central Station.

Additional information on the timetable design

The transport infrastructure updates are necessary to ensure the new timetable and to ensure that the train connections are processed without errors. As ÖBB.AT , there may be changes and diversions that are clearly communicated for travelers. These measures serve not only for security, but also to optimize the travel experience for commuters and travelers in the region.
