Stop the conveyor belt project: Resistance of the citizens brings success
The planned conveyor belt, which should create a connection between the Hartsteinbruch Loja and the Danube between Persenbeug and Krummnussbaum, is not built. This decision was made after numerous discussions and strong resistance in the region. The project originally had the goal of transporting rock material efficiently over a distance of about 1.2 kilometers and thus significantly reducing the traffic load by trucks on the streets.
Project manager Alexander Habsburg explained the withdrawal of the project in a press release. The plan provided for a significant reduction in the approximately 150 daily truck trips that are currently burdening the streets. However, this was rejected by many in the community, especially in Krummnussbaum, where both residents and the mayor were against the project.
resistance and political reactions
Resistance from the region played an important role in the decision to set the project. Governor Deputy Stephan Pernkopf from the ÖVP had already ordered extensive exams in September and emphasized that many questions remained open to clarifying. He led these aspects as central points in the conversations with the project operators.
Together with the National Council MP Georg Strasser, also by the ÖVP and President of the Peasants' Association, the decision to end the conveyor belt project was made. Mayor Bernhard Kerndler said pleased: "This withdrawal is a great success for our community. The effort was worth it."
Another factor that complicated the situation was the expected lengthy approval procedures. Habsburg and the building contractor Kurt Bernegger stated that they wanted to perform as a responsible partner of the community. Habsburg said: "The open questions and the resistance have shown that a lengthy approval process would be too difficult to implement." This problem makes it clear how important regional support is for infrastructure projects.
Despite the decision not to realize the conveyor belt, the traffic load remains a current topic. The daily truck transports that lead from the hard stone to Ybbs will continue, which will continue to burden both the streets and the environment. This will probably heat up the discussions about the environmental impact of the transport activities.
