Refurbishment of the state parliamentary session in St. Pölten: Start of construction 2026

In the heart of St. Pölten, the state parliamentary session in Lower Austria is subjected to comprehensive renovation. Construction is scheduled for the first quarter of 2026 and the work should be completed by summer 2027. The President of the Landtag Karl Wilfing (ÖVP) emphasizes that the total costs of 11.2 million euros can continue to be observed.

The architect Gunther Palme's winning project, which was selected by a jury with eleven members, provides for a remarkable redesign. The plenary hall is rotated 180 degrees to arrange the rows of deputies in a semicircle - an arrangement that is common in European parliaments. In addition, the room is kept in gentle sand and gray tones.

accessibility and technical renewal

A central goal of the renovation is the production of accessibility, which is intended to ensure access for all citizens. Furthermore, comprehensive technical and thermal renovation is carried out. Wilfing found that the hall was originally opened in May 1997 and that a fundamental modernization was urgently needed.

The decision to convert fell in March of this year, whereby the votes of ÖVP, FPÖ, Greens and NEOS pleaded for the project. The state parliament will meet during the renovation work in the Leopoldsaal in the St. Pölten country house, and it is expected that the first meeting in the new hall will take place in September 2027.

The new room is also equipped with an all -round grandstand, which will also be accessible. This will be of great importance not only for the MPs, but also for citizens. The technical renewal is intended to ensure that the hall meets modern requirements.

After the last meeting in the current hall, which is expected to take place in December 2025 or January 2026, the state parliament will temporarily meet in the alternative accommodation. Particular attention is also paid to the facility: objects that are no longer needed in the new hall are to be sold in a public auction. Christoph Reiter, the chairman of the jury, says that it is important to create transparent and open structures that are also visible in the new design of the meeting.

Wilfing emphasizes that the redesigned hall should stand for "transparency, openness and equality" and thus wants to strengthen the democratic principles. The meeting rooms are not only working rooms for the MPs, but also a place of encounter for citizens and elected representatives.

The renovation of the state parliamentary session is therefore an important project for the future of Lower Austrian politics. The architect Gunther Palme and his team have the task of creating a contemporary space that meets the demands of today and at the same time respects the traditions of the state parliament. You can look forward to the implementation and the first sessions in the new room, because they could be future -oriented for political culture in Lower Austria.
