Skiing in Lower Austria: Price shock for families and ski fans!

In Lower Austria, ski vacationers are in the Zwickmühle: While the prices for ski citakets have changed dramatically in recent years, a new pricing model causes additional confusion. A survey by the Lower Austria Chamber of Lower Austria has shown price differences in skiing in the high season, which can be up to 145 percent. For example, the price for a family of a family with two children at Semmering is 163 euros, while the same day in the Königsberg ski area in Hollenstein costs only 104 euros - an enormous difference of almost 60 euros, such as 5min.at reported.

But it will be more complicated: some ski areas, including Hochkar and Annaberg, have switched to dynamic price models. These prices are variable and depend on factors such as weather and booking situation, which makes the price comparison extremely difficult. On November 29, 2024, a price of "from 37.50 euros" was called for an adult day ticket at the Hochkar, but without a specified upper limit. As a result, the prices could also be higher at the Semmering, which creates uncertainty among potential skiers. Isabella Mittelstrass from AK Lower Austria explains that online bookings can often be up to 15 percent cheaper, especially for early bookers. However, she warns: "These tickets cannot be canceled"-with the exception of a paid canant, which can be booked additionally, such as Arbeiterkammer.at explained.

The price differences are particularly blatantly at the ticket for children: they range from 12.50 euros in corn tines up to 27.50 euros at Semmering. Consumers are therefore asked to check exactly before the purchase in which ski area and at what point in time they can use the best conditions. For families it could be worth considering smaller ski areas that often offer cheaper alternatives.
