FPÖ triumphs in elections: A new course for Austria?
After the National Council elections, the FPÖ has achieved a significant election victory, which significantly changes the political landscape in Austria. Reinhard Teufel, the district chairman of the FPÖ, sees the result a clear mandate for the freedom to participate in the formation of government. The increase to almost 30 percent and the leap to first place in the political ranking are a sign for the FPÖ that voters are responsible for their future orientation. "We have the clear mission to shape a policy of confidence and security in the next five years," said Teufel towards the NÖN.
Teufel is a member of the seven -member negotiation team, which leads the FPÖ to the possible formation of a coalition. This team is headed by Herbert Kickl and includes the two general secretaries Michael Schledlitz and Christian Hafenecker. Teufel emphasizes that the FPÖ is striving for the best possible solutions for the population, even in view of the current political challenges, which he does not see as caused by his party. "To ensure stability, we need a partner who is on the same wavelength with us," continued Teufel.
ÖVP and the possibility of opposition
The ÖVP state headmaster Stephan Pernkopf was also thoughtful about the future formation of government. He hopes that the Federal President places the order for government formation to the FPÖ. However, Pernkopf reported that due to other obligations, he would not be represented in the ÖVP negotiation team. "The negotiations will certainly be challenging," said his assessment.
ÖVP district party chairman Anton Erber added that the decision was now with Federal President van der Bellen and he assumes that the FPÖ would be commissioned. Erber sees possible overlaps between the FPÖ and the SPÖ on social issues and also assigns the ÖVP the role of a stronger opposition party to represent the well -being of the population.
A similar picture draws the Mayor of Scheibs Franz Aigner, who supports the idea that the ÖVP should go to the opposition to show other parties how to deal with political responsibility. "It will be a challenge for the FPÖ to find suitable partners for government formation," says Aigner and adds that clear agreements and goals are necessary to advance together.
SPÖ under pressure
Danner observes that the SPÖ has tended too much to the left in the past and sees the need for the party to accommodate disputes internally and to represent a uniform outdoor line to get back to voter trust.
The upcoming negotiations therefore promise to become exciting because they will significantly influence the political orientation of Austria in the next few years. The elections expired on September 28, 2023 not only shifted the weightings within the parties, but also steered the entire political agenda in a new direction.
