"Re#work": Extremism prevention in schools

In Lower Austria, the workshop "Re#Work" was carried out for extremism prevention in schools. State Councilor Christiane Teschl-Hofmeister, Interior Minister Gerhard Karner and Education Director Karl Fritthum visited the Bad Vöslau-Gainfarn high school in order to emphasize the importance of sensitization of young people for the topics of extremism and terrorism. The students should learn how to deal with these topics in order to counteract possible extremist influences.

According to Teschl-Hofmeister, the cooperation between school, parents and authorities is crucial to protect young people from radicalization. In addition to the imparting of digital competence, history and political education, offers such as the workshop "Re#Work" are valuable support for educators. However, participation in such programs is voluntary and is responsible for the decision of the schools.

Interior Minister Karner emphasized that the responsibility of the parents in this area also play a central role. On the one hand, the police carry out repressive measures, but also works preventively in schools. The radicalization of young people often takes place online, which is why prevention programs such as "Re#Work" should be offered nationwide. For this purpose, over a hundred police officers have already been trained who are specially trained for dealing with young people and deal with topics such as democracy and equality.

Extremism prevention in schools is an important step to sensitize and enable young people to sensitize and enable young people to risks and terrorism. It is of great importance that all actors involved, including schools, parents and authorities, work together to ensure successful prevention work.
