Quiet Halloween in Austria: Less crimes than expected

Hallowe nacht is a time full of fun and creep for many people, but in some parts of Lower Austria there were vandalism and minor incidents. The State Police Directorate reported an overall calm course, despite some reports on assault and destruction.

In Mistelbach, a glass container was badly damaged by a pyrotechnic object. An incident occurred in Amstetten, where a cigarette machine was blown up. The use of fireworks and similar pyrotechnics repeatedly leads to problem cases that are not only dangerous for the environment, but also for public security.

bodily harm and thefts

In the night of Friday, disputes were the reason for several assault in cities such as Neunkirchen, Purkersdorf, Baden and Gumpoldskirchen. People had to be taken to the hospital because of their injuries. So far, the police have not been able to determine perpetrators, which shows that such incidents often happen in the anonymity of the night. To make matters worse, two wallets were also stolen in Baden during a Halloween celebration.

The police are concerned about these incidents because they not only cause damage to ownership, but also endanger the physical integrity of the citizens. Such outbursts of violence contradict the festive atmosphere of a holiday known for its creativity and joy. These acts leave a negative traces on the otherwise carefree Halloween.

A look at the neighboring Vorarlberg shows an overall friendly Halloween atmosphere. The police reported 255 missions there, but acted from a quiet night without major incidents. The few registered assault and some missions due to egg throwing do not seem to be to be worrying. In these cases, no damage to property was caused, which shows that the difficulties in Lower Austria were more extreme.

The incidents, in particular the explosive of the cigarette machine and the assault, raise questions about dealing with pyrotechnics and the behavior of young people during such celebrations. These events could be signs of a more serious problem that requires a broader discussion in society about security and responsibility in public spaces.

On the other hand, Burgenland was spared such incidents during the Halloween night. There were no advertisements here and the citizens could largely enjoy the night without fear of violence or vandalism. This suggests that regional differences in the nature of celebration and the responsible use of alcohol and celebrations exist.

Overall, it turns out that a balance between fun and security has to be found in order to protect future Hallowea nights and to keep the joy of celebrating. It is important that the youth in particular are sensitized to the consequences of vandalism and violence in order to preserve the tradition of Halloween in a positive light.

The events of the previous night remind us that the supervision and the sense of responsibility of the celebrating are decisive in order to avoid similar incidents in the future.
