Volpone: An amusing view of greed in the Mödlinger Stadttheater
i n Mödling the new season was opened in the city theater last Saturday with an extraordinary performance. The piece "Volpone or the old fox" of contemporary dramatist Ben Jonson focuses on the human desire for wealth and the associated corruption. Despite the historical background of the work, these topics are surprisingly up -to -date and relevant.
The director's team around Sam Madwar has used a new, adapted version of the work based on processing by Stefan Zweig. A fresh, contemporary language was introduced, which enables the essence of Jonsons original. In the leading role, the actor Johannes Tern shines - he plays the insidious Volpone, who suggests his death to completely convict the greedy inheritance grinders. At his side is Sebastian von Malfér as his clever servant Mosca, who provides numerous amusing moments.
an unforgettable evening theater
The ensemble also includes talented actors such as Viktoria Hillisch, Ildoo Babos, Christoph Prückner and Peter Fuchs, who bring the events to life on stage. Particularly noteworthy is the musical accompaniment of Fritz Rainer, who takes the audience into a Venetian atmosphere by hinting on Vivaldi and the gentle cubes of pigeons. Sigrid Dreger's costumes are also a real highlight. They play cleverly with the clichés of the Commedia dell’arte and contribute to the comedic mood of the evening.
Despite the occasional voltage drop, the piece remains very entertaining and offers the spectators both humorous and thoughtful moments. The performance makes a bridge between the past and the present by raising questions about morality and ethics.
The piece will be seen until October 19. Interested parties can get more information on the website of the theater at www.stadththeatermoedling.at
"Volpone" not only represents a spectacle in a theater, but also reflects the timeless fights for power and money that are also present in our modern society.
