Initiative from Lower Austria and Bavaria on the future EU regional policy: Declaration as a clear signal against centralization
On Wednesday, a declaration on the future regional policy of the EU was passed in Brussels by a total of 74 European regions. This regional summit was initiated by Lower Austria and Bavaria to represent common interests and concerns about the future regional policy of the European Union. The declaration was handed over to the representatives of the European Commission and the European Parliament.
The governor of Lower Austria, Johanna Mikl-Leitner, emphasized the importance of the regions for Europe in her speech. She described the regions as "the bid of the hour" to "continue the European success story". Mikl-Leitner called for a continuation and strengthening of cohesion policy to counter the challenges in front of which Europe is facing. With the declaration, the regions set a clear signal against a centralization of cohesion policy and called for a successful continuation with a decentralized approach.
The Bavarian Minister of State Eric Beißwenger also emphasized the importance of the regions for Europe and supported the demands of declaration. Furthermore, representatives of EU institutions also spoke out for a future-oriented cohesion policy.
The declaration is a clear signal of the regions against the centralization of EU regional policy. The aim is that even after 2027, the regions are adequately taken into account and support and continue to influence the programming and implementation of EU regional funding.
Governor Mikl-Leitner also took part in a meeting of the regions committee, in which the focus was on renewed cohesion policy. There she emphasized the need for a clear commitment to strengthen the regions and a "renaissance of subsidiarity".
The declaration was supported by a total of 74 regions, which corresponds to a population of 190 million people.
