Chaos on Vienna's highways: truck fire and rear-end collision cause traffic jams

In the Vienna city highway, two serious traffic accidents occurred on Monday morning, November 18, which significantly impaired the traffic situation. While a truck went up in flames on the A22, a rear -end collision occurred on the A23, which led to hours of traffic jams.

around 9:45 a.m., a truck loaded with straw started fire on the Danube bank (A22) between the north bridge and the Floridsdorfer Bridge. The Vienna professional fire brigade has not yet been able to provide information about the cause of the fire, but a spokesman reports that the fire was a protracted use due to the flammable straw material and the need to change the load.

traffic jam on the A22 and A23

The fire led to the blocking of several lanes, and the traffic jam reached almost ten kilometers in the meantime. Around 12:30 p.m., the backlog was estimated at around 2.4 kilometers. Trucks were asked to switch to the S1 via the Korneuburg West junction, while cars were derived over the north bridge. Traffic disruptions were expected until around 2 p.m.

About 45 minutes after the emergency call regarding the truck fire, the police were informed about another accident on the Southeast Tangent (A23). Here there was a rear -end collision with several vehicles involved towards the south of Handelskai. This collision led to a further backlog of up to eight kilometers to Hermann-Bauer-Straße. As a spokeswoman for ASFINAG announced, the rescue operation took around 30 minutes, which also tightened the traffic situation.
