Schwäbisch Gmünd: Historical building shines newly with modern flair
In Schwäbisch Gmünd, a historic building is converted to meet modern requirements. During a tour of the construction site, Mayor Sonnenag emphasized the importance of preserving as much of the old splendor as possible. Elements such as the high ceiling of the fiction, large windows and the faithful stucco on the second floor should be preserved. "Marketplace 6 is one of the highest buildings on the market square to be an important part of the cityscape," says Sonnenag.
The main focus is on the redesign of the staircase. So far, the staircase was strongly winding and only accessible internally because it served both hotel and department store visitors. In the future, however, there will be some changes to meet the different uses of the building.
New staircase for modern use
From spring 2026, a brewery will open on the ground floor. In addition, the citizens' hall, registry office and business development are housed on the first floor. The second floor is used as a coworking space in: IT. "It would be impractical that employees of start-ups and citizens who have to do office matters go through the catering trade," emphasizes Sonnenag. Therefore, a completely new, barrier -free staircase with an elevator, which enables access to the different floors independently of one another.
The old staircase, with its wrought iron railing and the historic stone steps, remains. It is still used for internal connections, especially if catering services are provided for events in the citizens' hall.
The conversion of the former Woha will not only improve the functionality of the building, but also help to preserve the historical identity of the location. The plans offer a balanced mix of tradition and contemporary use, which is important for the entire cityscape. For more detailed information on the plans and progress of the project, Read on here .
