Böheimkirchen relies on LED: Mayor Haunold leads successfully!

The municipality of Böheimkirchen impressively shows how modern energy management works: With a comprehensive switch to LED lighting, Mayor Franz Haunold (SPÖ) was not only able to massively reduce energy costs, but also achieve technological progress. According to the energy and environmental agency (EnU), the municipality experienced a saving of around 220,000 euros in the first year after the changeover, which is particularly noteworthy with the current high electricity prices. In addition, almost all street lamps in Böheimkirchen are now under a digital system that further increases efficiency. Only two percent of the lamps are conventional, which makes Böheimkirchen a pioneer in Lower Austria, as ORF reported.

successful municipal council election

In parallel to the progress in energy savings, Haunold also has success in politics: In the 2025 municipal council election, the “List Mayor Franz Haunold - SPÖ” was able to convince with 50.24 percent of the votes, even if this means 3.11 percentage points less than in 2020. The ÖVP list under Martin Horacek fell in second place with 29.66 percent. Together with the voices of the freedom and the Greens, the SPÖ achieved a strong result and therefore remains at the top. This reports today.at.

The intelligent lighting system in Böheimkirchen uses motion sensors and enables the street lamps to adapt the brightness depending on the situation. From 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m., the lamps are dimmed to 60 percent, and a car or pedestrian approaches, the lighting is increased. Mayor Haunold underlines that this not only saves costs, but also ensures more security. In total, there are now 1,200 LED lanterns in the municipality, supported by nationwide grants that were able to significantly reduce the investment costs.

This environmentally friendly initiative is not only a financial gain for the community, but also serves as a model for other communities in Lower Austria. In such changes you not only see a possibility of reducing costs, but also a significant contribution to environmental protection, as Haunold and Enu managing director Herbert Greisberger emphasize.
