Citizenship lost: Ukrainian singer rejects anthem!
Baden, Österreich - A Ukrainian citizen surprisingly lost his Austrian citizenship status after refusing to sing the federal anthem in a solemn ceremony on October 15, 2024 in the Baden district administration. The Lower Austrian state government unanimously decided to withdraw citizenship. Governor Deputy Udo Landbauer (FPÖ) emphasized that identification with Austria is fundamental to maintain citizenship. "Citizenship is not a gift item, but an award that requires respect and appreciation," said Landbauer in a press release.
The Ukrainian had made it clear before the ceremony that he did not want to sing the hymn. Responsible State Councilor Christoph Luisser saw the revocation of citizenship as legally and clearly: "Citizenship can be awarded at the end of a successful integration process. Anyone who speaks against Austria simply did not understand it." This decision shows the strict handling of Austrian citizenship guidelines that are recorded in the Citizenship Act (StBG). According to the law, applicants must demonstrate long -term, uninterrupted residence, knowledge of German and an undamaged prehistory in order to maintain citizenship. The consequences of the legal regulations
The Austrian Citizenship Act clearly stipulates that the award of citizenship is not only bound to the stay, but also to the willingness to identify the Austrian culture and the political values of the country. Another point that is treated very strictly in both this case and in the law is the loss of citizenship. Austrian citizens automatically lose their citizenship if they accept a different nationality. This could have similar consequences for other citizens who violate the basic principles of society, for example by refusing speeches or symbols that are considered central to national identity. These strict guidelines reflect the current mood in Austrian politics and emphasize the importance of integration and loyalty to the state.
