Election results in Lower Austria: ÖVP loses, FPÖ celebrates municipal success!
In Lower Austria, the municipal council elections took place on January 26, 2025, in which 1.31 million eligible voters from 568 municipalities took part. It was important to decide on the line -up of 11,821 seats in the municipal councils. The People's Party (ÖVP) was able to result in 46.97 percent of the votes as a clear election winner, but had to accept a loss of voting compared to the 2020 elections. The Social Democratic Party (SPÖ) followed second place with 26.39 percent, also with a minimal decline. In contrast, the freedom (FPÖ) had a strong increase to 13.05 percent. The Greens came to 4.69 percent, while the NEOs reached 1.77 percent and other lists were 7.14 percent. In the St. Pölten, Krems and Waidhofen a.d. Ybbs did not take place, in contrast to Wiener Neustadt, where the ÖVP claimed the leadership despite losses and received 35.85 percent of the vote, such as 5min.at reported.
A remarkable trend was shown when the FPÖ in three municipalities first reached the top position at the municipal level: Enzersdorf an der Fischa, Pernitz and Lassee. The Greens achieved an almost sensational result in Mödling and were only able to land just behind the ÖVP at 26.51 percent, which, however, had to deal with a minus of 10.14 percentage points. A dramatic crash for the People's Party followed in Baden, which was able to win only ten out of 41 seats in the town hall with a minus of 17.22 percentage points. The black and green coalition also lost its majority in Amstetten. In the hometown of the former SPÖ boss Andreas Babler, Traiskirchen, the SPÖ also had to accept a decline to 11.99 percent, but still retained the absolute majority with 59.54 percent, as orf reported.
