Cyber attacks in Lower Austria: Brucha and Tulln in the sights of the hackers!

In the past few days, Lower Austria has been shaken by an alarming wave of hacker attacks. In the night from Sunday to Monday, it hit Brucha in Lower Austria, whose complete server landscape was paralyzed by an international hacking collective. Managing Director Susanne Brucha confirmed to Noe.orf.at that the attack was carried out with ransomware, a malware that limits access to important data and systems and demands ransom. Fortunately, the company's IT department was able to defuse the situation through a previously set up additional security. However, the restoration work is still in progress, and whether data was lost has not yet been determined. Despite the attack, production, payment transactions and customer service remained available throughout.

A worrying trend is emerging: shortly before the attack on Brucha, there were already two similar incidents in Tulln and Amstetten. There, the servers of the city of Tulln and a company in Amstetten were paralyzed by encrypted networks. As kosmo.at , the company in Amstetten received a text file with the name "Uhilpmyii.Readme.txt", which contained a link to the cyberriminelle. However, the company decided not to react to it, but isolated its system and worked intensively to remove the encryption. So far, no ransom demands have been received, and there are considerations not to meet them.

Investigations in the course

The police of Lower Austria classified the attacks as "extensive investigation". Especially with regard to possible connections between the incidents in Tulln, Amstetten and the attack on the Brucha company, everything remains open. Reports of noe.orf.at illustrate urgency to increase security measures in order to prepare themselves against such cyber attacks. In Tulln, the work to restore the systems is in full swing, even if there are already some services, such as cashless payment in leisure companies, are temporarily not available. The community is concerned and expects quick solutions, while the investigators continue to look for the perpetrators.
