Constables crown after thrills in flag football final!
In the exciting final of the Flag Liga Ladies 2025, which took place as part of the Sport Austria Finals powered by Austrian Lotteries, the Vienna Constables competed against the Domzale Tigers from Slovenia. The event attracted large numbers of spectators and was broadcast both live on sportaustriafinals.tv and delayed on ORF Sport+, while entry to both games was free. The Constables were at the peak of their season, having finished the regular season in first place and were already state champions.
The game was exciting from the start. The Tigers took an early lead, but the Viennese women were not discouraged. Katrin Mansbart, who commented on the game, expected a close match. In fact, the Constables proved to be stubborn opponents and took the lead shortly before the end. However, in a dramatic final minute, the Tigers turned the game around, which could have handed the Constables another final defeat in a row. But in a crucial moment, the Viennese team put everything on one card and scored the game-winning touchdown through receiver Franziska Sottner, just three seconds before the end of the game clock.
A worthy finale
The final score was 37:34 for the Constables, who were able to win the FLL championship title. Head coach Robert Riedl described the final as dignified and at a high level, which gave the final phase of the game a special charm. In his opinion, the final drive was the result of hard work and perfect plays. In the past, the Constables had lost the 2023 and 2024 finals and could finally celebrate.
In the game for third place, the Amstetten Thunder beat the DeLaSalle Saints 34:7. This encounter also took place in Innsbruck and contributed to the exciting atmosphere of the event. While the 2024 flag football season comes to an end with the super finals at the end of October, the Austrian women's national team is already preparing for international competitions, including the World Games in China in August and the European Championships in Paris in September.
For the men's national team, which is led by head coach Robert Riedl, a training camp is taking place in Mexico and the USA in order to prepare more intensively for the European Championships in September. Amid these exciting developments in flag football, it remains to be seen how the Austrian teams will fare in international comparison.
