NPP: Social apartments only for Austrians - immigrants excluded!

On April 25, 2025, Dominik Nepp, FPÖ state party chairman and city council in Vienna, criticizes the new regulation on the awarding of social housing. According to Nepp, the flexibility of access to the subsidized residential building represents a door opener for immigrants. In his opinion, he demands that access to community apartments should only be reserved for Austrian citizens. Third -party citizens should therefore only be entitled to funded living space if they work, speak German and legally live in the country. Nepp, as negative examples, leads the residential policy of the SPÖ and emphasizes that a vote for the FPÖ stands for a clear social housing, while the SPÖ is not capable of learning. This reports OTS .

The problem of living space is not only precarious in Austria, but also in Germany. The construction industry there is in a deep crisis. In 2022, only 300 new social housing in Leipzig were completed, although the need for living space increases continuously. According to IG-Bau boss Robert Feiger, this is an "absolute exceptional situation". The high construction costs and the quadrupling of the construction interest within one year are countered by the necessary housing construction. Around 700,000 social housing is currently missing in Germany, and despite the aim of the traffic light government, 400,000 state-funded units are missing in this legislative period. The Federal Government is planning investments of around 14.5 billion euros in social housing by 2026. This is the case with the report of Deutschlandfunk .

Current challenges in housing construction

A study by the "Alliance Social Wohn" shows that the housing situation in Germany has achieved the greatest housing shortage in 20 years. The number of social housing fell from almost 4 million at the end of the 1980s to only 1.1 million in 2022. Over 11 million households are entitled to a social housing, but the inventory is only sufficient for every tenth household. The lack of housing is further tightened by numerous factors such as the energy crisis, material shortage, supply chain problems and increasing construction costs. Forecasts indicate that the need for living space will increase not only because of immigration, but also as a result of changed living habits. This information comes from an analysis that was published by BPB

The challenges in housing construction are expected to exist in the coming years. In order to improve the situation, the federal government suggests creating tax incentives and moving the energy standards for new buildings. Nevertheless, it remains to be seen whether these measures will be sufficient to build the urgently needed apartments and to master the social challenges in the living area.
