traffic accidents in the EU
accidents like the named are part of a major problem that affects the entire EU. According to Europarl, thousands of people lose their lives or are seriously injured in traffic accidents every year. Between 2010 and 2020, the number of road traffic fats in Europe was reduced by 36 percent. Despite this decline, there were 22,800 traffic fatalities in 2019, in 2020 there were 4,000 fewer.
The preliminary figures show that in 18 EU member states the number of fatalities is at a record low, even if the pandeme-related decline in traffic has influenced the number of accidents. The high rates in some countries are particularly striking: Sweden recorded the safest roads with 18 traffic fatalities per 1 million inhabitants, while Romania reported the highest rate with 85 traffic fatalities per 1 million inhabitants in 2020. In the EU average, this number is 42.
The data also illuminates the age of the accident victims: 12 percent of the racing dead in 2018 were part of the age group of 18 to 24 year olds, although this is only 8 percent of the population. The proportion of over 65-year-olds among the road dead also increased.
These statistics show the importance of traffic safety and the need to take measures to reduce the number of traffic accidents and to secure the streets for all road users.
