A shock for all tenants in Austria: In 2024 rents rose by a whopping 4.5 percent, after an already drastic increase of 7.4 percent in the previous year. According to the latest figures from the Statistics Austria, the costs for a main rental apartment including operating costs are now 653.60 euros. This corresponds to a rental rate of 9.8 euros per square meter. The operating costs are also not to be neglected: in 2023 they were around 163.7 euros per apartment, which further increases the financial burden on the tenants. New contracts cost an average price of EUR 11.8 per square meter, while old contracts that have been in effect for over 30 years only cost 6.3 euros. In the last three months of 2024, the monthly rents also increased to EUR 662.9, which means 5.6 percent increase compared to the same period last year. This shows that rental prices in Austria still rise three times faster than in the entire euro area, criticizes the union institute near the trade. The additional costs also rise sharply. In 2022, the additional costs nationwide reached an average of 2.28 euros per square meter, with regional differences that significantly influence the costs. For 2024, between 160 and 450 euros per month is expected for a 70-square-meter apartment.
