Macron and Putin: Conversation about Ukraine and Iran after two years!
Ukraine, Land - Emmanuel Macron and Vladimir Putin spoke to each other for the first time in over two and a half years. The two -hour conversation was of great importance and included central topics such as the Iranian nuclear program and the Russian attack war on Ukraine. Macron called for immediate ceasefire in Ukraine during the conversation and was committed to the beginning of negotiations between the warring parties. The Kremlin confirmed the phone and also mentioned the tense conditions in Ukraine as a further point of discussion.
Macron, which emphasized France's support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, also asked Iran to meet his obligations under the nuclear weapon blocking contract. This includes cooperation with the inspectors of the International Atomic Energy Organization (IAEA). French diplomacy aimed at finding diplomatic solutions for the challenges that raise the Iranian nuclear program and the rocket questions.
Putin's point of view
In conversation, Putin pointed out that the conflict in Ukraine was a consequence of the politics of Western countries that had ignored Russia's security interests. The Russian President also renewed his regional claims to the Crimea and the East Ukrainian regions of Luhansk, Donetsk, Cherson and Saporischschja. He also confirmed the desire to create a "buffer zone" in the Ukrainian border area, which would lead to an expanded control over Ukrainian territory. Both heads of state agreed to coordinate their efforts in terms of Iran and maintain future contacts in relation to both Iran and Ukraine. This is followed by increased cooperation between Russia and Iran, which was funded by the Ukraine conflict. Iran supports Russia with weapons and drones and thus plays a role in the bypass of Western sanctions, while Russia grants Iran access to geopolitical institutions such as the Brics+ and the Shanghaier Organization for Cooperation (SOZ)
background of the cooperation between Russia and Iran
Despite the increased cooperative behavior, relationships between Russia and Iran remain shaped by historical distrust and are subordinate to pragmatic interests. At the beginning of 2025, both countries signed a strategic partnership agreement, which, however, hardly offers new content and shows the limits of their cooperation. While the war in Ukraine serves as a platform for deeper cooperation, both countries pursue different strategic goals - especially in the Middle East, where they come across different views in regional policy.
In the recent past, the pressure on both countries increased through the geopolitical tensions and sanctions, especially from the western states. The military cooperation remains asymmetrical, and while Russia focuses on Ukraine, this has changed the balance of power in South Caucasus and beyond.
Overall, the conversation between Macron and Putin not only illustrates the continuing tensions in the Ukraine conflict, but also the complex and often contradictory relationships between the countries in the context of international security and geopolitical cooperation.
