Liechtenstein strengthens the role in Europe: opportunities and challenges!

Liechtenstein, Liechtenstein - On July 18, 2025, Liechtenstein is again in focus in international politics. The head of government has emphasized the need to position the country well in terms of European integration. Liechtenstein has been a member of the European Economic Area (EEA) , which came into force on May 1, 1995 for the Principality. This agreement, which also includes Iceland and Norway, enables access to the EU internal market and guarantees free goods, service, passenger and capital traffic.

The head of the government said that the country is well represented in other international organizations beyond membership in the EEA. In addition to the EEA, Liechtenstein also belongs to the Council of Europe, the UN, the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The IMF membership characterized the country as a major effort because annual exams are pending.

integration and international responsibility

Despite its small size, Liechtenstein plans no further institutional entries. The government sees itself well represented in the existing international organizations. The country also shows a sign of national responsibility through the support of Austria in the UN Security Council candidacy. Liechtenstein has all the EU sanctions, even if it is not obliged to do so.

about 800 people from Ukraine have found refuge in Liechtenstein, which underlines humanitarian support in the region. In addition, the country is looking for exchange with its neighbors Austria, Switzerland and Germany, especially with regard to the security strategy.

traffic and infrastructure

Liechtenstein also started initiatives to improve transport links in the region. A proposal for the introduction of cross -border tariff unit in public transport between Switzerland, Vorarlberg and Liechtenstein was created. Nevertheless, the government regrets the decision against the two -track expansion of the railway line between Feldkirch and Buchs, as this could lead to an increase in traffic. In order to counter this challenge, bus traces are set up.

There are also concerns about the planned Feldkirch city tunnel, which could also cause more traffic loads. The entire transport infrastructure remains a current topic for the government.

social development and equality

A social highlight is the appointment of the head of government, the first woman in this position to see this as a significant sign of equality. The right to vote was only introduced in Liechtenstein in 1984, which once again underlines progress in equality.

Although Liechtenstein does not take part in the Eurovision Song Contest, there is still joy about winning the competition by Austria, which illustrates the cultural connection in the region. The state bishop Benno Elbs, who has been the transitional administrator of the Archdiocese of Vaduz since 2023, is in an important religious role, especially since the successor to the resigned Archbishop Wolfgang Haas is delayed by the death of Pope Francis.

In summary, it can be said that Liechtenstein is still actively involved in international politics and at the same time takes up domestic challenges in order to represent and protect themselves and its citizens as best as possible.
