Kunstforum Vienna is moving: Marina Abramović exhibition in danger!

Kunstforum Wien, Österreich - On June 11, 2025, the Board of the Kunstforum Vienna announced that the institution will clear its previous location early in August 2025. This decision brings with it a number of changes, including the relocation of Marina Abramović's planned exhibition to Albertina Modern. This shift makes the transition to a new location and the search for new cooperation partners.

The Kunstforum Vienna is known for its top -class exhibitions and has established itself in the past as an important platform for contemporary art in Vienna. In an open letter, the board, which includes prominent members such as Oscar Bronner, Heinz Fischer and Anton Zeilinger, expressed hope for the continuation of the institution by Unicredit Bank Austria. This has already given a promise for a "cultural million" to secure the continued existence of the art forum.

exhibitions in the Kunstforum Vienna

The Kunstforum Vienna has a story of impressive exhibitions. A remarkable show was that of James Francis Gill, which took place from July 29 to August 16, 2020. Over 40 works by the artist were presented under the title "Reflections". Gills work centrally with the topic of "Women in Cars" and build on his early work from the 1960s.

The works are characterized by a greatly reduced representation of the people, in which the cars only appear as a staffage in the background. Gill's pictures not only reflect the zeitgeist, but also show a deep examination of the topics that have been busy for decades. Especially in his late work there are political and socially critical accents, which impresses with the combination of iconic representation and abstract elements.

Marina Abramović-The Grand Dame of Performance Art

Marina Abramović, born on November 30, 1946 in Belgrade, is a Serbian performance artist who deals intensively with the relationship between performer and the audience. She describes herself as the "grandmother of performance art". Her works explore the limits of the body and the possibilities of the spirit, whereby it often focuses on topics such as pain and physicality.

with a career that extends over more than four decades, Abramović has carried out big exhibitions worldwide. Their influence extends beyond the purely artificial and creates a connection between art and its spectators. Her childhood, strongly shaped by strict religious rituals and the experiences of her family, has significantly influenced her artistic approach.

In view of the announced changes from the Kunstforum Vienna, it remains to be seen how the institutional structures develop and what new perspectives will arise for contemporary art in Vienna.
