Fight for self -determination: World population report 2025 reveals facts!

This year's world population report of the UNFPA is devoted to the realities of life of people who cannot found the desired form of family. The report is entitled "Fertility in the crosshairs. The struggle for reproductive self -determination in a changing world." According to the results obtained from surveys in fourteen countries, many people do not have freedom to decide themselves about their reproductive life. It becomes clear that the crisis is less in the over or underpopulation, but in the fact that individuals often cannot reach their desired fertility goals. These findings were [by unfpa] (https://www.ots.at/presseaus-sung/ots_20250612_ots0084/unfpa-weltbevoelungsbericht-2025-fertilitaet-im-Frekreuz--Ringen -um-Selstunstei- In-a-Ssich-Welt), whereby the Austrian Society for Family Planning (ÖGF) the announcement in Austria.

The political dimension is also emphasized for family planning. Governments often try to influence birth rates through various measures, which often limits the freedom of choice of women and couples. This particularly affects women, of whom 44 percent worldwide have no decision -making about sexual relationships, contraception or access to reproductive health care. Around 750 million women live in countries with restrictive abortion laws, and 45 percent of all abortions carried out are considered unsafe. Such circumstances represent a significant threat to the reproductive rights of women, as is emphasized in the analysis of DSW.

obstacles when founding a family

The obstacles that women and couples experience in fulfilling their desire to have children are diverse. Surveys show that 23 percent of the participants have an unfulfilled desire to have children; Over 40 percent even gave up. These hurdles to start a family are often analogous to the challenges that also occur in contraception, such as poverty, lack of education and health problems. On average, people worldwide want about two children, but almost a third of those surveyed who have already completed their family planning were given fewer children than planned, while 12 percent were given more children than sought. Political influence and populist as well as nationalist trends exacerbate this pressure on family planning and reproductive self-determination, as is also discussed by DSW.

essential for the improvement of this situation is the provision of resources for sexual and reproductive health as well as social infrastructures that promote the compatibility of work and family. Voluntary and equality -oriented measures have the potential to increase the willingness to start a family. In contrast, compulsory policy can often have the opposite effects and should therefore be avoided. Angela Bähr from the DSW indicates the urgency of political and social framework conditions that ensure real freedom of choice for women.
