Winter strikes back: snow and cold return to Austria!

A striking change of weather has reached Austria, with the return of cold and snowfall. The high -pressure area over Northern Europe and the low pressure area over Eastern Europe have a decisive influence on the current weather conditions. Cold, dry air from Arctic regions flows into the country, which leads to a change of mild temperatures to fresher conditions. In the northeast of Austria, the weather conditions remain under the influence of Eastern European deep, while the west benefits from cheaper weather conditions. These changes bring a recognizable decline in temperatures that are now between 3 and 8 degrees.

On Monday morning, sunshine shows in many places, but this is overshadowed by dense clouds in the east. In Lower Austria in particular, there could be a few rain or snowfall above 400 to 500 meters in the afternoon. In the regions from Vorarlberg to Carinthia, sunny weather predominantly shapes the day.

Overview of the weather forecast

Numerous clouds in the east are predicted for Tuesday, while occasional showers in the north and east can occur. The snowfall limit from 600 to 900 meters will increase. In Vorarlberg to Upper Carinthia it remains friendlier, with temperatures between 6 and 12 degrees and a moderate to lively northwest wind.

Wednesday could offer a mix of sun and clouds. While the clouds could compress themselves in the mountain and hill country, it stays dry. The temperatures rise to 10 to 15 degrees, accompanied by a weak to moderate wind from the north. On Thursday, calm spring weather shows with dense clouds and short sunny sections. Apart from isolated showers, it stays dry, while a lively to strong northwest wind prevails and the temperatures are between 10 and 14 degrees.

climate change and weather events in Europe

By probabilistic attribution studies, scientists can promptly determine after extreme weather events to what extent such conditions have become more likely due to climate change. In addition, an interactive online tool was developed that enables the influence of climate change on weather events in almost real time. The tool, which offers daily data on temperature and precipitation curves from January 1, 2024, is available at climate-storylines.awi.de

The current weather conditions in Austria illustrates the constant changes, which are caused by climatic influences, and also shows the importance of well -founded data to assess these developments. While the weather is changing in the next few days, it remains to be seen how the climatic factors will affect the weather conditions in the country in the long term.
