Heavy rain and flooding: Istria fights against the floods

In Croatia, the low pressure area called "Finny" causes significant problems for the residents, especially in the Istria region and on the border with Slovenia. On Wednesday, the heavy rain led to far -reaching floods, which affected numerous streets and underpasses. There were special scenes in Sveti Lovreč, where real waterfalls formed. Channel lid emerged in the city of Rijeka, and entire streets were flooded in Novigrad. In the capital Zagreb, too, the rains provided kilometers of traffic jams on Thursday morning.

The weather conditions were alarming: According to the Weather Service Istramet.HR, more than 200 millimeters of rain were measured in the region on Wednesday. The precipitation in the greater Rijeka and in the central and northern Istria were particularly strong. Meteorologists counted that the main rainfront would reach the southern region of Istria on Thursday, where there are also considerable precipitation.

The Croatian hydrometeorological institute (DMHz) remains optimistic, but warns of massive rainy amounts in the next two days. The forecasts indicate that torrential floods can occur in different cities, which could also require additional flood protection measures. These warnings affect almost completely Croatia, with the exception of the extreme east.

There are special dangers in Dalmatia, where strong gusts of wind are expected at speeds over 120 km/h. In addition, the regions of Zagreb and Karlovac are affected due to intensive rains, while the areas of the northern Adriac coast are also on alert. Depending on the further development, Lika and the surroundings of Zadar could also suffer from the weather conditions. The forecast rains in the next few weeks could further increase the water levels of the rivers.

The European Center for Medium -term weather forecasts (ECMWF) has predicted strong rainfall growth in the regions of Western Slovenia, along the Adriatic coast and in the Croatian hinterland. More than 150 millimeters of precipitation could be expected in the next ten days, with the majority of these quantities to fall until the weekend. In particular, the hydrological model of the European flood warning system (EFAS) indicates a significant flood risk in the river areas of Rječina, Kupa, Dobra, Mrežnica, Korana, Glina, Una, Lika and Gacka. The rivers Zrmanja, Save, Mur and Drau are particularly at risk.
