CHS Villach sets signs against light pollution - a model for schools

The CHS Villach has positioned itself as a pioneer in environmental protection by the first school in Villach of the "Light out!" has joined. This action launched by the city of Villach aims to reduce light pollution and thus protect the environment and the quality of life of the citizens.

As part of a special day of action that was under the motto "CHS for Future", the students of grades 3AKMD and 3BKMD dealt with the topic of light pollution. They conducted interviews with local companies that have already taken steps to minimize their outdoor lighting and flaring signs. The results of these interviews make it clear that light pollution not only has a negative effect on the environment, but also on the health and well -being of people. The students learned that a clear starry sky is one of the smaller evils that arise from excessive lighting.

At the suggestion of Vice Mayor Sarah Katholnig, the students went in search of the criteria for participating in the initiative. Thanks to the modern, environmentally conscious lighting control in your school - thanks to sensors, all lights automatically switch off at 9:45 p.m. - it was not difficult to meet the prerequisites. The pupils used their new knowledge creatively and designed informative posters to capture their findings. These posters were presented proudly during a visit by Vice Mayor Katholnig and City Councilor Christian Pober.

In recognition of their commitment, the CHS was awarded the “Light out!” Sticker as the first educational institution in Villach, which is now emblazoned at the entrance to the school. This symbol makes it clear that the school actively contributes to reducing light pollution. "It is great to see how committed our youth occurs for environmental issues," Vice Mayor Katholnig invited to one word and was pleased with the commitment of the students. With this step, the CHS Villach demonstrates how education and awareness of the environment can be successfully brought together.
