The municipal councilor Berger shares unforgettable adventures in Uganda

Georg Berger, municipal council in the meeting and organizer of the Treffner Kulturwochen, participated in Uganda this summer when building a school. This was not just a short trip, but an impressive experience that opened up many new perspectives. In a four -week work camp that took place from July to early August, he actively helped to advance the educational project.

The journey to Uganda can almost be seen as an adventure for yourself. Berger originally missed his connecting flight in Istanbul and ended up in Nairobi via detours before finally reaching Uganda. The trip was also the starting point for a deeper bond with the "Alccu" association, the work of which has gained more and more importance in the past. After a moving lecture during the Meetn Kulturtage about the need for education in Uganda, he immediately sponsored a girl. "The aim of the association is to support as many children as possible in Uganda so that they can go to school. The focus is on donations and local actions," explains Berger.

The work on site

In the work camp, the 71-year-old lived and worked on the site of the Alccu Primary School Kawula. His accommodation consisted of a brick house, while he himself was the only European in the group to be an exotic exception. "This experience of being in the minority was new to me and also very educational," recalls Berger with a smile. An important element of the work camp was advertising for school in the neighboring areas to encourage more children to register. Berger was often perceived as the first white in the villages, which very touched him and brought him closer to the warmth of the local population. Despite the simpler living conditions, such as the lack of electrical current and flowing water, he estimated the joy and courage to live that he experienced in humans.

construction of a secondary school

A central project during his time in Uganda was the construction of a secondary school that started last year. "The secondary school, on which I was also allowed to work, is crucial to break through the cycle of poverty, which is often passed on from generation to generation." Despite the physically exhausting activities during the building, Berger had a lot of fun and the work was accompanied by happy music and singing. Special moments emerged when he met his godchild, the nine -year -old Evelyne, for the first time. Berger had gifts for her: his granddaughter's favorite dolls from Austria. "It was a very emotional moment for me," he explains. He also had to think about Evelyne's simple wish: "She told me that she wanted a few shoes, which made me very thoughtful." His stay in Uganda was more than just a charity project for him; It was an educational and intensive time full of encounters that shaped him sustainably.

Berger never lost sight of the goal of helping the children. The donations that were collected by the association bought a new school bag to each child, which the children were delighted. All of this shows how small things can give great joy and how important education is for a better future. The Alccu association tirelessly works to improve the living conditions for children in Uganda, and the engagements like that of Berger are a significant part of this valuable social work that is performed in Uganda.
