Same work, unequal payment: Carinthia shows blatant differences
In Carinthia, the difference in income between men and women remains an unsolved problem. According to current statistics, women in Carinthia still earn about 17 percent less than their male colleagues. As a result, women statistically work for free from October 30, 2024, since men have already reached income on this date that women still have to earn by the end of the year.
The ÖGB state women's chairman Silvia Igumnov emphasizes that the average annual income of women in full -time work in Carinthia is 47,424 euros, while men earn an average of 57,259 euros. This results in an annual income disadvantage for women of around 9,836 euros. Igumnov also warns that this difference not only brings with it short -term financial losses, but also could result in long -term consequences such as reduced claims in unemployment and pension claims.
regional differences in the focus
If you consider the income differences within the different regions of Carinthia, it becomes apparent that there are considerable discrepancies. The city of Spittal an der Drau leads the list with an income difference of 25.3 percent, followed by Villach Land, where women earn around 21 percent less than men. Klagenfurt city has the lowest difference in income with 11.6 percent, but still remains behind equality.Another remarkable point is that the possibility of the same payment varies not only in Carinthia, but also in other federal states. While the Equal Pay Day falls on October 30 in Carinthia, this will happen in Vorarlberg on October 7, where the difference in income is 23.4 percent. In Burgenland and Vienna, the differences with 15.6 and 10.8 percent are the lowest.
Statistical recording of the income differences
The recording of the income differences in the various districts of Carinthia shows the significant imbalance between the sexes. According to the current figures, the gap in the Spittal district on the Drau is greatest with 25.3 percent. Furthermore, the following districts have also recognized as significant:
- Villach (land): 20.8 %
- Wolfsberg: 19.8 %
- Villach (city): 19.3 %
- Klagenfurt (land): 17.1 %
- st. Veit/Glan: 16.6 %
- Hermagor: 16.6 %
- Feldkirchen: 16.3 %
- Völkermarkt: 15.0 %
- Klagenfurt (city): 11.6 %
These numbers underline the challenge of promoting the gender equality in the labor market. Without targeted measures, the unequal payment and their perspectives for women in Carinthia could continue to exist, which could have both individual and social effects. The discussion about wages and equality is therefore of great importance for future development in the region.
