Tauern lock from November: Bahnbau between Mallnitz and Böckstein

From November 18, 2024, the Tauern tunnel between Böckstein in Salzburg and Mallnitz in Carinthia will be closed for a significant period of time. This blocking, which will take by July 2025, is necessary to carry out comprehensive construction work that should bring the tunnel to the latest state of the art. The Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) have confirmed that a single -track lock is not possible due to structural challenges, which is why a total lock is inevitable.

During this blocking period, a replacement of rails that provides for buses via the A10 is set up. These buses run between Bischofshofen and Spittal an der Drau without intermediate stops and run in both directions every hour. If there are traffic jams in front of the construction sites, the buses use a specially reserved track on the highway, which has already proven to be effective last year. The railway lines Spittal-Millstättersee-Lienz and Spittal-Millstättersee-Mallnitz-Obervellach will remain accessible during this time.

Important information for travelers

The area around the winter tourism locations in the Gastein Valley remains available for travelers by train from Salzburg until the beginning of March. From this point on, however, modernizations and conversions of the train stations also begin there, which ensures future restrictions. Travelers should therefore inform themselves in good time and plan their course of travel to avoid possible inconvenience. These comprehensive changes promote long -term improvement in travel conditions, even if the lock initially means significant cuts.
