Cross -border rescue exercise in the Loiblunnel: Cooperation between Austria and Slovenia in action
On Friday, October 11, 2024, there was a significant cross -border exercise in the Loiblunnel, which had great commitment. Coordinated by Slovenia, over 80 firefighters from six fire departments from the Klagenfurt Land district were also on site. The exercise served to simulate a serious traffic accident, in which a coach and several cars had an accident immediately after the Austrian border.
The firefighters moved on the north portal of the tunnel and immediately went to the site. Her first task was to free several people from two badly damaged cars, which they carried out together with the Slovenian emergency services. This type of exercises is crucial for the preparation for real emergencies, since they improve the interoperability between the emergency services of both countries.
collaboration in an emergency
During the mission, the Slovenian emergency services also provided support in saving the injured from an accident. The exercise impressively showed how effective the cooperation between the two countries is. An additional exercise scenario outside the tunnel included the rescue of a car that had slipped over an embankment. Such scenarios are not only an excellent opportunity for training, but also to strengthen relationships between the surrounding communities and organizations. The last exercise in the Loiblunnel took place in 2013, and the participants agree that repeated joint exercises are essential in order to be well prepared in an emergency. The district captain Mag. Johannes Leitner and other high-ranking observers, such as BH-Kat speaker Alex Walser and Kat representative Markus Hudobnik, were present and were able to experience the strength of the fire brigade first-hand.
These exercises offer a structured way for the firefighters to test and improve their skills in a controlled environment. After completing the exercise, a joint evaluation took place on the southern portal of the tunnel, in which valuable knowledge and experiences were exchanged.
