Volkshilfe Carinthia: 15 years for a safe home in Klagenfurt

The Volkshilfe Carinthia recently celebrated a double anniversary in Klagenfurt, which included 15 years of assisted living and ten years of housing. These programs aim to support people so that they do not become homeless and to avoid cost -intensive delogings. The increasing problem on the housing market, characterized by rising rental prices and the presence of investors, ensures intensive competition for living space.

In the years from 2014 to 2024, Volkshilfe Klagenfurt was able to show remarkable successes with its initiatives: 766 of 981 delogings were prevented. According to Alexander Matzan, who is responsible for securing housing and homeless help, the financial burdens of a delogation are enormous - they are around 30,900 euros, while the costs for a furnished apartment can even rise to 55,000 euros.

a questionable anniversary

In the Hilde-Särf-Haus, the anniversary was celebrated in the presence of local decision-makers, including Mayor and social officer Christian Scheider, Volkshilfe President Ewald Wiedenbauer and Managing Director Jürgen Pfeiler. Despite the celebrations, the speakers stood in a critical light, since the current living space situation makes it clear that the human right is increasingly at risk.

from the student home to the social project

Originally, the Volkshilfe was responsible for making living space available to students and students. However, this concept has changed over time. Ewald Wiedenbauer remembered the beginnings when the socially supervised living was launched to offer people who face challenges such as unemployment or separation. The partnership with the city of Klagenfurt enabled Volkshilfe to react to the pressing needs of the community.

The living situation is still tense. Jürgen Pfeiler reported that the existing 80 residential units of Volkshilfe are fully occupied and 15 people are on the waiting list. He appealed to external providers to provide more apartments because access to living space is a decisive step towards a stable life. "We would be helped with 15 external apartments," Pfeiler continues.

The People's Aid projects are not only social, but also sustainable and make a long -term contribution to improving the life realities of the people in the region. Kathrin Dolzer and Alexander Matzen gave the guests of the anniversary insight into the fates of those affected and illustrated the importance of their work.

In a time when the housing market becomes increasingly challenging, it remains to be seen how Volkshilfe and other social institutions will continue to react to the needs of the community. The importance of living space for a regulated life cannot be assessed highly enough, and given the current developments, the need to tackle these topics is more urgent than ever.
