Carinthia's tourism in crisis mode: How sinking overnight stays demand change!
Kärnten, Österreich - The tourism industry in Carinthia faces major challenges. While in 1980 there were still an impressive 18.98 million overnight stays in the hotels and leisure facilities, the figures in 2024 only amounted to 13.1 million. This represents an alarming decline for tourism representatives, which should not only be excused with the weather. According to ORF Carinthia, it is time to take new measures in order to counteract this downstream. A central proposal is the introduction of a tourism fund, in which 50 cents of each local and tourist tax that pays guests should automatically flow. This money is to be used specifically for the modernization of the infrastructure, says Wolfgang Kuttnig, the managing director for tourism and leisure management.
In order to strengthen tourism in Carinthia in the long term, closer cooperation between tourist decision -makers and entrepreneurs is required. The IHK Rhineland-Palatinate emphasizes the importance of these cooperation for the further development of regional tourism. The improvement of the economic framework is intended to increase the industry performance and the quality of the services. Specialist events such as the "IHK tourism meeting" are organized to inform the top performers about current developments and to promote exchange with each other. In these initiatives, the focus is on the attractiveness of the tourism providers for specialists and young people, which is crucial for the securing of future specialists.
less bureaucracy, more time for guests
Another urgent topic is the reduction of bureaucracy in the hospitality industry. According to the industry speakers, employees spend up to 19.3 hours a week with administrative tasks, which restricts the possibility of taking care of the guests. In order to remedy this grievance, targeted measures are to be taken that focus on personal support for the guests. So that the locals can also identify more with tourism, an upgrading of the tourist offers and service quality is necessary. This is the only way to achieve that both tourists and the local population benefit from a lively tourism landscape, as the Carinthia Chamber of Commerce demands.
