Unemployment figures rise in Austria: Salzburg records the highest increase of 15.9 percent
In September of this year, the unemployment rate in Austria increased by 10.6 percent compared to the previous year, which corresponds to an increase of 33,905 people. The unemployment rate climbed by 0.6 percentage points to a total of 6.6 percent. The prospects for an early improvement in the situation are dark, as Petra Draxl, director of the Labor Market Service (AMS), confirmed.
The areas of goods/industry, traffic and warehouse, construction, trade as well as gastronomy and accommodation are particularly affected by rising unemployment. In contrast, the increase in the hiring up and in health and social work was somewhat lower.
The effects of the shrinking economy are also evident on the job market, with a decline in vacancies by around 14 percent compared to the previous year. The Economic Association recorded a total of over 161,400 vacancies, while the number of employed employees fell by 0.2 percent to 3.98 million The increase in unemployment in Salzburg was particularly strong, followed by Upper Austria, Tyrol, Styria and Vorarlberg. The slightest growth, on the other hand, recorded Vienna, Burgenland, Carinthia and Lower Austria.
The current situation on the labor market in Austria clearly shows the effects of the economic situation on the employment situation in the country.
