Innovative security standards for renewable energies in Shanghai unveiled

Shanghai, China - On June 12, 2025, the grid forming & Energy Storage System (ESS) Safety Forum instead of Huawei Digital Power The event attracted customers, partners, insurance companies and certification organizations from the PV and dining industry. At the center of the forum were the development trends and applications of grid forming technology as well as the discussion about the establishment of a security ecosystem for ESS.

Steven Zhou, the President of the Smart PV & ESS product line at Huawei, held the opening speech and emphasized the crucial role of Energy Storage Systems (ESS) in the integration of renewable energies and the guarantee of stable network operations. The event also marked the introduction of the ESS Safety Initiative , which aims to improve the safety of Energy Storage Systems.

technology and security standards

Huawei presented the new fusionolar 9.0 Smart PV+ESS solution based on the promotion of grid forming technology. Four security standards were proposed: unflammable, not explosive, not spreading and not harmful . In addition to these specifications, an innovative cell-to-grid security concept was presented to increase system reliability.

A significant part of the discussion revolved around the technical challenges in the commercial use of the GRID forming technology. The participants, including experts from TÜV Süd and Wood Mackenzie, also discussed the need to establish uniform security standards for ESS and to promote the investment climate in this area. Robert Liew from Wood Mackenzie pointed out that by 2034 around 1.1 trillion USD must be invested in battery storage systems (BESS) in order to keep up with the expected global electricity requirement.

market development and investments

The Market for battery storage systems (BESS) becomes more and more relevant internationally, especially in Germany. In Germany, strong political support and investment incentives are expected. The following market segments were identified:

market segment percentage (new installations 2023) growth rate (2023–2032)
home memory (≤ 30 kWh) 85% 0.2%
industrial memory (30–1,000 kWh) 6% 9%
Large memory (≥ 1,000 kWh) 8% 31%

This data show the enormous investment potential in the areas of home storage, industrial applications and large storage. The increasing trend towards renewable energies and the need for network stability are driving development.

In summary, the forum is not only an important step for Huawei, but also a significant contribution to creating safe and innovative solutions in the area of energy storage. The discussions and findings will help to lift the security level in the industry and to develop new business models.
